America the Beautiful

By now you may have seen the preview for the documentary film America the Beautiful set for release this Friday in Chicago, followed by 30 other cities across the country. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to watch it here:

As you read this, I am preparing to go to Chicago for the premiere Tuesday night and have an opportunity to meet the filmmaker Darryl Roberts. I embark on this trip with great anticipation for several reasons.

First, film is one of my passions and the idea of jetting off to Chicago for a film premiere just seems too good to be true. Now I know there won’t be a red-carpet lined with paparazzi snapping my picture, but I can’t help but wonder who I might meet there, after all, Paris Hilton seems to make an appearance in the film.

The second reason I’m excited is that someone has taken the time to really examine the idea of beauty in American Culture and produce a film that has the potential for widespread impact. What makes that even more interesting is that it isn’t someone from the world of eating disorder treatment, but rather an entertainment insider. I look forward to learning from his observations and expanding my own knowledge on these issues.

The third reason for my anticipation is that I hope to connect with Mr. Roberts (at the reception following the film) as well as others and explore how we may partner together in the hopes of bringing more exposure to the True Campaign and our goal of challenging cultural ideals of beauty and identity.
