A Month Without Makeup - Day One Recap

Monday, February 02, 2009 - Comments 2

It was an interesting first day. So much to share already, but I’ll keep it short since it’s nearly midnight on the first day when I’m writing this.

Since I’m calling this challenge an “experiment,” it would probably be good to set out some parameters re: what I am trying to prove/disprove during this month without makeup. With that in mind, here are some beliefs I have had regarding going without makeup:

1. People will react negatively to me and/or ignore me if I’m not wearing it.
2. People I am trying to reach with my work will not want to listen to what I have to say because I don’t look like someone they should admire.
3. People won’t want to work with me on a business level because they are disappointed that I am not better looking.
4. People (particularly women) will think they’re better than me because I don’t look as good as they do.

I’m sure there are more beliefs than this, but in writing this out, I couldn’t help but be struck by the fact that all of my fears are of what “people” will think. Note that not one item on the list has anything to do with what God will think of me. It reminds me of one of my favorite verses in Proverbs 29:25 (MSG): “Fear of human opinion disables. Trusting in God protects you from that.” Hmm…

I also plan to tell you where I go each day, as well as to keep track of positive vs. negative responses during the experiment. So, today I went to:

1. Costco
2. Walmart
3. Target
4. To meet a donor friend and his business partner to pick up the video of me and Darryl from Friday night.

Negative responses: 0
Positive responses (including your sweet comments here!): 15

Favorite line of the day, from my friend Bill, “When you came in tonight I thought you looked very fresh.”

I’m fresh, alright. ☺

Hey Constance,
I’m following your journey and I think it is very cool - the fact that you are posting photos is the BEST!  We so often compare ourselves to the next person - it was nice to wake up this morning and see a beautiful, fresh face and not instantly think “hmmm, I wonder what color lipstick she is wearing - I need that...”, etc.  I too saw America the Beautiful when it was in Minneapolis - it really was amazing - what was even more amazing was for that 2 hour time frame, being in a room with other like-minded individuals watching an honest and real look at beauty in our society, it was almost like being in a really cool bubble for just a second because you knew everyone there had a story of some kind and everyone there really wants to impact and redefine the standard of beauty - it’s a pretty cool thing...and then YOU take it to the nth degree with this project - I LOVE IT!!!
In honor of “finding balance” which is one of my favorite mottos and something I work on EVERY DAY - when the 30 days is over, maybe you will meet yourself in the middle and switch to a fresh look using organic make-up?  organicdivas.com has a ton of really great, helpful and educational information - just a thought.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us!  I’m loving it - and please know, that all of us True Campaigners are ON YOUR SIDE!

Regarding #2: I know 1 person’s opinion matters little, but I’ve actually always had a very hard time taking you (and your work) seriously BEFORE this, b/c it’s rather contradictory to try to tell people not to obsess over their appearance (e.g. weight) when all your photos before this have been of a woman whose makeup and hair and clothes are all perfected by makeup, highlights, designers, etc.  So… maybe now I can. Take you seriously, that is.  Keep growing and letting God stretch you.
