Honesty for Father’s Day

Thursday, June 12, 2008 - Comments 0

I can’t believe Father’s Day is this weekend; I’m not at all prepared! Oh, I’ve got lots of ideas, but haven’t figured out how to make them happen yet. One great idea was spawned by watching the following video, created by the daughter of John Lynch, one of the authors of TrueFaced:

First, what an amazing gift for a dad to receive! Second, this video reveals just how important a father’s role is in a daughter’s life, and how powerful our words to our dads can be, when honestly voiced.

Because of the work I do, I realize that some of you may feel resentment, or disappointment, when watching a video like this. So many daughters lack the kind of bond displayed here – a bond we all desire, whether or not we choose to admit it.

Baby Fat

“I’m sorry, that’s bite-able,” said the woman as I strolled through Kohl’s last weekend with my nine-month-old daughter, Sophia. She was referring, of course, to Sophia’s pleasingly plump little body, which was barely contained by the confines of the shopping cart.

In fact, there are chubby rolls everywhere on her body. And I love them. So did the lady who couldn’t help but squeeze her that day at Kohl’s.

But not everyone has such a positive response. Like my neighbor, who recently seemed to view my sweet little girl’s chunkiness with some measure of disdain. It wasn’t in what he said exactly. More in the way he looked at her, as if she was handicapped or something.

Lights, Camera, Paparazzi

I’m sure you all have waited with baited breath since my last blog entry about my upcoming trip to see the premiere of the documentary America the Beautiful. Sorry I’ve not written sooner, but all the wild parties with celebrities took its toll on me…

OK, there weren’t any wild parties (and if there had been my wife wouldn’t have let me go) but there was a nice reception after the film where I had the chance to meet Director Darryl Roberts and one of the main characters in the film, model Gerren Taylor. Darryl was very generous and I, along with a colleague from Remuda Ranch, got to skip the lines and sit in VIP seating (that’s about as glamorous as it got). Darryl is a genuinely warm person and greeted me with a large hug after the film.
